World Congress 2010

The 67th World Congress of IOGT International took place in Fredrikstad, Norway in 3rd - 7th August 2010. IOGT England and Wales were represented by the National President and his wife. The Congress was attended by Delegates from thirty-two countries, ranging from the USA, Europe and Africa to the Far East. Seminars were held which considered, among other themes, the WHO study of Alcoholism, and Sobriety. Informal discussions took place between delegates. Various Resolutions were accepted , including one from IOGT Germany which was to hold a study to consider bringing back the idea of a unity between all the member organizations, something which has seemed to have been lacking in recent years. Any one with any ideas on this is asked to contact the two members of the Convening Committee; the National President is one of these two so ideas can be sent via the email on the Contact Us page. Social Activities took place at Congress, including a Concert version of 'The Show Must Go On', the tribute to Queen, starring Age Sten Nilson, a former Eurovision Song Contest entrant. Congress accepted the invitation to hold the next Congress, in 2014, in Thailand.

National Conference 2010

The National Conference took place at High Leigh Conference Centre, Hoddesdon during the weekend 16th - 18th April 2010. The National President, in giving his Presidential Address, spoke about the similarities between the alcohol problems at the time of the origins of the Organization and the conditions in England and Wales today. He also pointed out the references to proposed policies in the Election manifestos of the three main political parties, and said that each of them seemed to be missing the damage done to society by the beverage use of alcohol. He urged members to use the coming Election to question candidates about their personal and party views on alcohol legislation.

Three resolutions were agreed to be sent to the Home Office, the Department of Justice and the Department for Media, Culture and Sport.

1. That floor prices or minimum prices of £0.50 per unit be placed on alcoholic drinks. This may reduce the incidence of binge drinking and the harm caused by drinking alcoholic drinks, according to the University of Sheffield report. (Report published on-line 24th March 2010)

2. That all loss-leader and price-based alcoholic drinks promotions such as 3 for 2 should be banned.

3. That all alcohol drinks should be identified in unit measures to inform the public of their content.

4. That as there has been shown to be a strong likelihood of a link between alcohol advertising and the use and abuse of alcohol such advertising should be banned.

The National Conference took place on 18th and 19th April 2009 at Swanwick Hayes Conference Centre, Alfreton, Derbyshire. In his Conference speech the National President spoke about the economic problems that have beset not only this country and the World, and how some High Street names have disappeared. He suggested that some companies face problems due to absenteeism caused by alcohol-related issues. He also spoke about research published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism which showed that there is a clear link between the amount of alcohol featured on television and the effect on those who watch such exposure of alcohol. The President stated that the Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said that the Govenrment were introducing a sustained alcohol awareness programme, and he suggested that the Govenrment should have introduced this in 2004 with the publication of the Naional Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy.

During the week the Conference discussed and adopted a new version of the Constitution, and agreed some resolutions, at the suggestion of the National Vice President, to the Goverment.

National Conference 2008

The National Conference took place at Glenfall House, Cheltenham, on 19th and 20th April 2008, preceded by a meeting of Active-UK on Friday 18th April 2008. In his Conference speech the National President spoke about the Alcohol Awareness Week (7th - 14th April 2008) and asked if it would really have made an impact as it did not seem to have been publicised enough. He spoke about recent statistics; 150 youths are admitted to hospital each week with alcohol-related conditions, up 40% since the licensing laws were relaxed. Even more startling is that in the South-West the figure is 80%.

He also referred to:- Mr Justice Coleridge's comments about family life being in meltdown, and how alcohol is a contributory factor; J.D. Wetherspoon's chairman Tim Martin blaming parents for underage drinking: Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's comments on the Government's plans regarding a multi-million pound campaign about the dangers of binge-drinking. Finally the National President called on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to realise that alcohol is eating-in to the country's budget, since it uses precious resources which could be better employed.
Reports were given by the National Officers in charge of Public Relations, Education and Youth. The National Vice President proposed a resolution to be sent to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Home Office and the Prime Minister. This was carried and read:-

That the Government legislate to put an end to the sale of loss-leading and cheap alcohol which can lead to drink-related violence, and puts a strain on resources.

The APD held its annual meeting on the evening of 19th April 2008 at Glenfall House, Cheltenham. Speakers from local groups concerned with Alcohol dependency were unavailable, so the Secretary of APD gave details of research she had carried out into some of the local groups and their work.
